What are magic mushrooms?
Magic mushrooms are wild growing mushrooms that produce hallucinogenic effects when eaten. Two common species of magic mushrooms include the more common Liberty Cap and the more potent Amanita Muscaria, which is also related to deadly amanita mushrooms.
What are the effects of taking magic mushrooms?
Magic mushrooms have a similar effect to LSD and can leave you feeling confident and relaxed. The hallucinogenic properties can make colours, sounds and objects warp and become confused. Just like LSD, magic mushrooms can make time appear to either slow down or speed up.
Are magic mushrooms addictive?
Magic mushrooms are not addictive although people can become tolerant of the effects, similar to LSD.
Are magic mushrooms legal?
Despite being available in the wild, magic mushrooms that contain psilocin or psilocybin are illegal with a jail penalty for supplying or possessing.
What classification are magic mushrooms?
Magic mushrooms containing psilocin or psilocybin are classified as Class A drugs. Possession of Class A drugs carries a maximum penalty of 7 years imprisonment and a fine and a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and a fine for supply.

Magic Mushrooms are very common on the Isle of Man, especially in the autumn.
What are the risks of taking magic mushrooms?
As hallucinogenics, magic mushrooms can also give you a ‘bad trip’ which can be an extremely disturbing experience. Flashbacks at any time afterwards are also a possibility.
Users may become detached from reality as the world around them becomes distorted and they may not be in full control of what they are doing.
When taking mushrooms it is critical that users know they are eating the right type of mushroom as taking the wrong mushroom can result in illness and even death.
What do magic mushrooms look like?
There are number of poisonous mushroom species and some resemble edible varieties making eating mushrooms collected from the wilds extremely risky.
Amanita Muscaria are red in colour with white spots. They are more potent than the more common Liberty Cap mushroom, which is small, brown and bruise a bluish colour when touched.
What should I do if I think somebody has a problem with magic mushrooms?
