What are poppers?
Poppers are liquid chemicals that, when inhaled, deliver a short rush by dilating blood vessels and allowing more blood to travel to the heart. Poppers are alkyl nitrates, particularly amyl nitrate, butyl nitrate, isopropyl nitrite and isobutyl nitrate.
The chemical is toxic and can kill people if swallowed.
What are the effects of taking poppers?
Sniffing poppers helps relax muscles in the body and give a head rush that lasts for a short period of time. They are often taken recreationally in clubs and during sex where they can prolong orgasm.
Are poppers addictive?
Poppers are not addictive.
Are poppers legal?
Yes and no. Amyl nitrates are controlled under the Medicines Act but other poppers are sold as ‘room deodorisers’ as a way to get around the law; the original ‘legal high’. Technically speaking poppers are volatile liquids and so could be classed as solvents.

Are poppers common on the Isle of Man?
There is little anecdotal evidence to indicate widespread prevalence on the Isle of Man.
What are the risks of taking poppers?
The chemical liquid is toxic and can cause death if swallowed. Side effects of sniffing poppers include, headaches, nausea temporary erectile dysfunction and a rash, particularly around the nose and mouth. It can also be dangerous for people with known heart conditions, glaucoma and anaemia. Due to the effect of poppers on blood vessels and muscles they should not be taken by people on medication to reduce blood pressure or if you have taken Viagra.
The liquid chemical can burn your skin if it comes into contact and is highly flammable.
What do poppers look like?
Poppers are usually a gold coloured liquid sold in small bottles.
What should I do if I think somebody has a problem with Poppers?
