NEW legislation is being proposed to give police greater powers to tackle serious organised crime.

It is a response to the threat posed to the island by international drugs and financial crime networks.

Growing small amounts of cannabis should be decriminalised, according to the charity Release.

It campaigns for reform of the drug laws and says arresting people who grow fewer than 12 plants, for personal use, is a waste of police time and effort.

Alcohol to cost 25 per cent more in Scotland thanks to 50p minimum price

The SNP Health Minister has announced she is upping the minimum price she originally proposed from 45p to 50p per unit, leading to an increase in the cost of buying most beverages from shops and off licences.

David Cameron’s Government want to introduce the same measure south of the Border but using a price of 40p, meaning Scottish consumers will have the most expensive drinks bill in the UK.

Young women facing ‘serious harm’ to liver from alcohol

More women in their 20s are suffering from severe liver damage as the result of excessive alcohol consumption, a senior doctor in Norfolk has warned.

Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital consultant Martin Phillips said the number of younger women patients with cirrhosis has steadily increased.

A Peel man has been in court today following a significant drugs bust on his home.

The Police seized £5,300 worth of drugs believed to be cocaine from the house on Market Street, a small amount of a class c substance was also found.

Drug drivers face jail term under new laws

Drug driving will become a criminal offence punishable by up to six months in jail, under new laws to be unveiled this week.

Ministers are acting to end the anomaly which requires police to prove that a motorist’s driving was impaired by drugs for a prosecution to succeed.
